How to pack a suitcase efficiently

by | Dec 3, 2020 | Useful tips

Going on holidays or just taking off on business for a few days? However long your trip is, you need to follow these easy rules and tips when packing a suitcase.

  1. Layering
  2. If you are heading off to a winter destination, consider investing in a lightweight, windproof jacket rather than that heavy fur-lined ankle length coat. Investing in Thermals too allows you to wear your normal clothes without looking like a panda bear in a puffer jacket! Good thermals are very thin and lightweight. Depending on the forecast, invest in a long sleeve and sleeveless thermal and maybe even leggings. Don’t be tricked into taking heavy coats and large jackets, unless you are wearing them, not packing them. If you’re going to a beach destination, don’t worry about taking a beach towel. You can usually buy them cheaply if you need them, or invest in a good backpacker towel that takes up no room at all!

  3. Do you really need all those shoes?
  4. Good walking shoes are very important. Make sure you have a pair that you can wear with jeans, shorts or dress up with your favourite black pants for a night out. If you are taking boots that take up a lot of room, consider wearing them on travel day rather than packing them. Throw in a pair of Aussie thongs (flip flops for everyone else) and a pair of comfortable dress shoes or sandals for a glam night out. A good pair of flat sandals that can be dressed up or down is a great idea.

  5. Don’t take essential toiletries.
  6. It’s much easier to buy essentials like shampoo and conditioner, deodorants and other items when you are at your destination. Your toiletry/make up bag can take up so much room in your suitcase.

  7. Pack outfits rather than individual items.
  8. If you are going for five days or more, only pack enough clothes for five days. That means you only have to launder at most once every five days, even if you are going for three months! Lay out your five outfits before you pack and then add a couple of extra separates you could use to make a few more outfits. That pair of black pants or jeans can be worn several times with different tops. My bottoms to tops ratio is 1:2 That means I pack two tops for every one bottom!

  9. Stick to Neutral Colours.
  10. Neutrals are easy to accessorise, so remember the basic black blue or grey pants, tee shirt and jumper. With a lightweight scarf or some bright jewellery, they can be dressed up or down for any occasion. Same applies to Handbags. Use a backpack for daily use and then take a small cross body bag or small handbag for all other times.

  11. Only Take Essentials as Carry On.
  12. Don’t carry more than you need to. Pack or wear sunglasses (so you can go make up free!), moisturiser, headache tablets if you need them and carry a lightweight scarf or extra tee shirt. It’s good to have a backup in case you spill airline food on your top! Pack a hairbrush, hair band for long hair and always wear comfortable clothes. Shoes that are easy to get on and off and a pair of comfy socks for long flights.

  13. Don’t be tempted to fill empty space in your suitcase.
  14. Just because there’s room doesn’t mean you should keep adding extras. Leave some room to bring back gifts and those extras you find overseas.

If you’re planning a holiday and need an insider’s advice, use a local travel agent to help you make up your itinerary. Remember too, if you need an airport shuttle use a local company, Uber driver or taxi firm and book in advance to ensure you get to the airport in time. Some drivers have limited room for suitcases, so if you are a big family or group, just ask.
